THE GAIA PRINCIPLE (SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE!)
Nikki Attree is an artist (paintings, 3-D objects, digital art, installations), whose work combines the emotional impact of art with the power of the internet to spread her message. She's just started a new project, focusing on the environment—the harm we’re doing to the planet, and this is the first painting in the series, titled: THE GAIA PRINCIPLE (SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE!).
James Lovelock, scientist and environmentalist, explained it like this: "The Gaia Principle describes the Earth as a single, living organism, with all its biological, geological, chemical and hydrological processes acting in concert, to regulate the planet and ensure its survival through an exquisite array of feedback loops.”
'SEE WHAT YOU'VE DONE!’ illustrates this fundamental principle by showing a living, weeping planet and the emotional impact it has on a young boy—the generation who’ll inherit the damage our greed has caused.
Since 2007 Nikki has lived in Tenerife, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. As a keen windsurfer, she has witnessed the pollution of the ocean with plastic waste and the effect this has on marine wildlife. Part of her environmental project will involve making sculptures of endangered species from recycled plastic rubbish. Her work and its message will be shared with environmental campaigning groups online, in magazines and via the media. It will eventually be shown in an exhibition of paintings, sculptures and installations.
