Why are Flowers Blooming in the Winter?

Why are flowers blooming in the winter? Also, are winters getting warmer?

Answer from Laurent Cousineau

There are in fact certain types of plants that bloom in the winter (take a look at this article) but it varies with the climate as well as the time of year. Furthermore, there are many different biomes including:
  • Coniferous Forest
  • Temperate Forest
  • Desert
  • Grassland
  • Rainforest
  • Shrubland
  • Tundra
In addition to all of this, there is manmade climate change. It is important to understand that the climate has always changed but it is the rate in which it is changing that is a serious issue.

In essence, greenhouse gases are responsible for the increase in average global surface temperatures, also known as global warming. Since it is the average temperature over the entire year that will increase, a winter will not necessarily be warmer than the previous.

Also, a year is not guaranteed to be warmer than the previous. For instance, 1999 and 2000 were colder than 1998. On the other hand, if you compare decades there is an obvious trend (the 2000s compared to the 1990s and the 1990s compared to the 1980s). To learn more, go to Ten Hottest Years on Record.

Therefore, it is possible for a certain town or city to have an unprecedented cold winter while manmade global warming ensues. However, there are cold records being made every single year but there are many more heat records being made as a result of global warming.
